At the end of February 2026, the moment had arrived: we took a big step toward making our French B&B more sustainable. The solar panels were installed and connected, and since then—nothing but sunshine!
Well, that might be a slight exaggeration, but we’ve already enjoyed plenty of sunny days.
We expect to generate more than 50% of our own energy needs with our solar panels throughout the year. With a fantastic app, we can now determine the best times to run the washing machine, dishwasher, or charge the car. This has become a fun task for Jeroen!
Living with Greater Energy Awareness
Living in France, we enjoy a lifestyle that reduces our environmental footprint:
- We no longer have a daily commute.
- We grow our own vegetables, potatoes, and even saffron.
- We collect rainwater in large tanks.
- Our chickens provide fresh eggs.
- We use heating sparingly, and our wood stove keeps us cozy in winter.
- Laundry is hung outside to dry as often as possible—never in the dryer. Towels spend just 10 minutes on the line and come out wonderfully soft, which our B&B guests love!
Nature and Hospitality
Our B&B is nestled in the heart of nature. The hirondelles (swallows, our namesake) returned two weeks ago, along with bee-eaters, little owls, hoopoes, green woodpeckers, and cuckoos.
